Anaximenes of Miletus (ca. 570-ca. 500 BC)
    

Greek philosopher who was a pupil of Anaximander. Anaximenes was the first Greek to distinguish clearly between planets Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy and stars. Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy He believed the primary substance of the universe to be air, which could form the other elements of water, Earth, Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy and fire by rarefaction and condensation. He explained the rainbow Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy as light hitting condensed air (i.e., water).
