Apollonius of Perga (ca. 262-ca. 190 BC)
    

Greek geometer from the southern coast of Turkey who postulated that the planets Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy revolved around the Sun Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy and the Sun Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy revolves around the Earth. Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy Apollonius is believed to be the inventor of the system of epicycles and eccentric circles, used extensively by Hipparchus of Nicaea. He also wrote a monumental treatise on conic sections Eric Weisstein's World of Math entitled On Conics. In this treatise, the term ellipse Eric Weisstein's World of Math was first used.
