French physician and pathologist who defined life as the sum of forces resisting death. Based on numerous post mortems,
he identified tissues as the basic units of life. He identified 21 types of tissues in Anatomie Générale
(General Anatomy) (1801) and Traité des Membranes (Treatise on Membranes), (1800), and may therefore be
considered the founder of histology. He also studied pathology.
