Crelle, August (1780-1856)
    

German civil engineer turned mathematician. He founded the Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik in 1826, which in his day was universally known as Crelle's Journal. Crelle befriended and supported Abel during his visit to Berlin. Crelle himself studied factorials. Eric Weisstein's World of Math However, his work contained several errors which were subsequently fixed by Weierstrass.
