Darwin, George (1845-1912)

English astronomer and physicist who was the second son of Charles Darwin. He extensively studied frictional effects on tides, and proposed that tidal friction was slowing the Earth's Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy rotation rate, and causing the Moon Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy to spiral outward in order to conserve angular momentum. Eric Weisstein's World of Physics
