Frankland, Edward (1825-1899)

English chemist who was the first to study organometallic compounds. Such compounds were used in the important reactions developed by Grignard in 1900. He also developed the valence concept, which states that each type of atom has a fixed capacity to combine with other atoms (a fixed number of valence sites).
