English crystallographer hired by Wilkins to study DNA. She recognized the A and B forms of
DNA, and discovered that the phosphate group must lie on the outside of the structure. Franklin
performed X-ray diffraction studies which showed James Watson and
Crick's original model to be wrong. Franklin and Wilkins demonstrated that the double helix
model later found to be correct was consistent with the data. For this work, Wilkins shared the 1962 Nobel Prize
in medicine with Watson and Crick, but Franklin's contributions went largely
unacknowledged.
