Franklin, Rosalind (1920-1958)

English crystallographer hired by Wilkins to study DNA. Eric Weisstein's World of Chemistry She recognized the A and B forms of DNA, Eric Weisstein's World of Chemistry and discovered that the phosphate group must lie on the outside of the structure. Franklin performed X-ray Eric Weisstein's World of Physics diffraction studies which showed James Watson and Crick's original model to be wrong. Franklin and Wilkins demonstrated that the double helix model later found to be correct was consistent with the data. For this work, Wilkins shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in medicine with Watson and Crick, but Franklin's contributions went largely unacknowledged.
