German physicist who investigated the spectrum of the sun and discovered the dark line spectrum (now known as Fraunhofer lines) in 1814. Fraunhofer is also known for his investigation of diffraction of light in systems with small Fresnel number, now called Fraunhofer diffraction in his honor.
