Austrian-British nuclear physicist, born in Vienna in 1904. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Vienna and was subsequently a lecturer at Berlin, Hamburg, and London (1933-34). He worked with Niels Bohr in Copenhagen (1939-1940), and James Chadwick in Liverpool (1940-1943). He was head of the Critical Assembly Group at the Los Alamos Project (1943-1946), head of Nuclear Physics Division at Harwell (1946-1947), and professor at Cambridge University (1947-1972).
