Gold, Thomas (1920-)

Austrian-British-American astronomer who was known for his deep physical insight and willingness to resort to bold and unconventional theories when conventional ones would not fit the facts. For this reason, Gold proposed a number of substantially incorrect theories. He proposed that matter was continuously created in the expanding universe to keep the density constant (the Bondi-Gold steady-state cosmological model Eric Weisstein's World of Physics). Although this theory has since been shown to be incorrect, it is still of much historical significance. Gold also incorrectly proclaimed that the American lunar lander would sink into a meters-thick layer of dust on the surface of the Moon. Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy One of the most important correct theories of Gold was that pulsars Eric Weisstein's World of Physics were rotating magnetized neutron stars.
