English astronomer who built a private observatory from which he studied spectra of nebulae, stars, planets, comets, and anything else he could lay his telescope on. He also developed a method for photographing spectra. He noticed a Doppler shift in the lines of Sirius, and fairly accurately reported its radial velocity.
