French chemist who suggested the use of a thermocouple to measure high temperatures and invented the optical
pyrometer. In 1888, he stated the rule known as le Châtelier's principle , which states that when a system is disturbed from equilibrium, it will re-establish equilibrium
in such a way as to minimize the original change. He also translated Gibbs's works into French.
