Müller, Johannes (1801-1858)
    

German physiologist who showed that sensory nerves can only interpret an impulse in one way by showing that the optic nerve records a flash of light when stimulated. He published a large physiology textbook entitled Elements of General Physiology, and trained students such a Schwann, Schleiden, and Virchow. He also studied the decomposition of animals and the elemental composition of organic matter.
