American physicist who showed that the proton  was not Dirac's antielectron. He headed the
Los Alamos Nuclear Research Facility which built the first atomic bomb. He lost his security clearance
during the McCarthy period, mainly as a result of the incriminating, alarmist, and largely fabricated testimony of
Teller.
