German physicist who did fundamental work during the early years of quantum mechanics. He also studied the physics of lattice vibrations (phonons ) and developed the concept or the electron "hole" in solid state theory. After moving to England, he concluded with Frisch that a ²³⁵U atomic bomb would be feasible. Peierls subsequently worked on the American Manhattan Project.
