Scottish physicist who was a close friend of Maxwell's and his contemporary in the study of fields.
With Kelvin, he published Treatise on Natural Philosophy (1867), which was important for establishing
energy within the structure of the theory of mechanics. (It was later republished under the title Principles of
Mechanics and Dynamics by Dover Publications). Following up of Kelvin's suggestion that atoms were
composed of tiny strings knotted in various configurations, Tait made the first systematic study of
knots and their properties.
