van de Hulst, Hendrik (1918-2000)

Dutch physicist and astronomer born in 1918 in Utrecht, the Netherlands. He is the author of Light Scattering by Small Particles (1957) and Multiple Light Scattering (1980), and his 1951 mimeographed A Course in Radio Astronomy was an important forerunner of early textbooks in the field. His work first centered on the solar corona and on interstellar matter and shifted later to radio astronomy. He theoretically predicted the 21 centimeter spin-flip transition of HI. He has been active in many functions promoting international cooperation in space research (Sullivan 1984, p. 414).
